The winning combination. Technically, there are an infinite number of combinations, which is what they rely upon. They use special machines designed to choose numbers randomly so that you cannot guess or foresee the winning numbers. It is purely by chance that anyone wins.

Do you mean, how many possible national lottery number combinations are there that you could play?

In the National Lottery (which is outside of my country, but I looked up the details), a player chooses 6 different numbers between 1 and 49. So you can pick one of 49 different numbers for your first choice, one of the remaining 48 for your second choice, one of the remaining 47 for the third, etc. But this includes all the different ways you can arrange 6 numbers, so we have to divide by the number of arrangements you can have for each of these. So the answer is 49*48*47*46*45*44 / (6!) = 10,068,347,520 / (6*5*4*3*2) = 13,983,816.

Picking 6 numbered balls from 49 (all numbered consecutively) without replacing them. How many combinations are there? First ball has 49 choices. Second ball has 48 choices. Third ball has 47 choices. Fourth ball has 46 choices. Fifth ball has 45 choices. Sixth ball has 44 choices. Total is 49 x 48 x 47 x 46 x 45 x 44= 10 068 347 520.

any combination of 6 numbers could win, though only one will each draw. This is different from saying how many winners there were s there could have been more than one ticket with the same combination.
