The generally accepted cause of the death of Adolf Hitler on April 30, 1945 is suicide by gunshot and cyanide poisoning. The dual method and other circumstances surrounding the event encouraged rumours that Adolf Hitler may have survived the end of World War II along with speculation about what happened to his remains; however, the 1993 opening of records kept by the Russian KGB and FSB confirmed the widely accepted version of the death of Hitler as described by Hugh Trevor-Roper in his book The Last Days of Hitler published in 1947. The Russian archives did however shed new light on what happened to the cadaver.

The idea of leaders having look alikes has happened. H. Montgomery Hyde in his biography of Stalin notes that the Russian dictator used some in World War II.

However, the case of Hitler was different. Germany was being annihilated in World War II. The Soviet Union was making a powerful push and Hitler was trapped in the bunker. After his invasion has caused millions of Soviet deaths, he was terrified about falling into their hands. There were many reliable witnesses, secretaries, cooks, other help in the bunker at the time. Hitler finally married Eva Braun. He then made out his last will and testament and shot himself in the mouth through the head, and died instantly. Eva Braun Hitler (you never hear referred to as such, but she actually was) committed suicide by poison. Their bodies were then burned as instructed by aides.

The German military situation had so deteriorated that an escape effort would have almost certainly failed as did Mussolini's (he was caught and hung and humilitatingly defaced--Hitler did not want this to happen to him).

William Shirer, who spent much time in Nazi Germany and pouring through the documents has written the best account of Hitler's rule and death in "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich."
I am not aware of any serious journalist or historian who would challenge the fact that Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin, Germany.

Hitler and his wife then went back into their private quarters while Bormann and Goebbels remained quietly nearby. Several moments later a gunshot was heard. After waiting a few moments, at 3:30 p.m., Bormann and Goebbels entered and found the body of Hitler sprawled on the sofa, dripping with blood from a gunshot to his right temple. Eva Braun had died from swallowing poison.

I doubt that it was a hoax, I really think that he committed suicide. I mean, if you kill that many people, you have to realize what you did at some point and he was probably just overwhelmed by it. I mean, he was in his bunker for a long time, he had nothing to do but think-so thats probably what he did, and then he killed himself. Besides, he might have also thought that the allies were going to catch him and im sure he would have rather killed himself than let others do it for him.

In the final days of the war, Hitler, along with his new wife, Eva Braun, committed suicide in his underground bunker in Berlin, as the city was being overrun by the Red Army of the Soviet Union.

We all must learn the futility of war. Sometimes it takes more courage to lay down weapons than to pick them up. I wish George Bush and the Republican party would study the life of Hitler and the history of World War II. Since George Bush didn't serve in Viet Nam, he can't learn a lesson from that war.

I believe he did, he obviously hated himself, as he was the exact image of what he was trying to eradicate, also, if you studied his personal history, you'd see just how he got so messed up in the first place - he may be perceived as an even bigger monster than GW Bush, but I am able to pity him...

Either he killed himself or the Soviets killed him when they found his bunker or when they where bombarding Berlin but my guess is he committed suicide since he was such a coward he couldn't stand the fact that his enemies might capture him and kill him.
