Yes, to your main question. But we can't discuss Third World Debt, or the Energy Crisis here, except as relates to GLBT issues.
There's a very real issue that gets discussed over and over again. There are many gay and lesbian teens that have been raised in Christian fundamentalist and other extreme families. These kids are VERY upset and often feel as if they have no one to talk to, no place to turn for help. They come here for support in dealing with this conflict and are looking to hear the other side of the story. This forum represents a safe place to come to for a different slant.
It is not just a forum to spread negativity. I've learned so much about just how ridiculous the bible is here. I enjoy the humor and wit and find some of it really entertaining. But the big contribution is in countering the negative influence of the fundamentalist teachings. These effects can hardly be underestimated. The incidence of gay teen suicide is said to be 2 or 3 times the average. And this is over and beyond the day-to-day hazing, discrimination and violence engendered by this force for evil masquerading as good.
You say, "adults turn to childish yo mama comments.", but these comments for the most part don't come from adults. Most of these "yo mama' comments are from kids who repeatedly hear at home and in the church that homosexuality is bad, immoral, sick, perverted, against God's will, or some such b*llsh*t. This is the place where we get to counter that influence and present the voice of reason.
And no, the mudslinging will continue as long as fundamentalist insanity has a voice and is not continually challenged.

I try to only answer legitimate questions on here and so far I'm at over 1,700 answers, so I guess some progress is made. I have messenger and email enabled and I do have people contact me outside of Y!A through Y!A for answers to their questions as well.

Your first mistake is assuming that people here are adults. You KNOW we get a lot of grade-school kids who still think homophobia is just funny. But in answer to your question: yes, there are serious and thought-provoking questions but they're a minority drowned out by stupid.

Sure, real issues are discussed here.
You've never brought one up. Any and all of your questions(when you aren't cruising) bear varying degrees of contempt and hostility combined with an insufferably arrogant attitude and are answered in the same manner that they are asked.

Hmmm...why don't you tell me. Seems the one who's spreading negativity is you and all the other trolls and bigots.
You haven't once posted anything that wasn't meant to harass others or stir up negitivity.
If you would like to post such questions, they would be more than welcome, but until you stop your baiting you will get responses in kind.

"We" don't consider "YOU" part of "this" forum at all. None, nada, zilch, zero. You are the one that come here spreading negativity and you have the nerve to say its us? As long as you spread hate, we will answer in like.
