In case the execution is stopped after the 1st set of meds has been injected. There are usually 3 sets of meds injected, the execution can be stopped even after all of the meds have been given, so if they didn't use sterile needles they could pass a disease to the prisoner and then he could be pardoned at the last minute. Or that's what I think anyway. Also a lot of people say it's inhumane.
