What a wonderful piece of music. And it made a great theme tune, too...
Aram Khachaturian was the composer, and "Spartacus" was the title (it's actually a ballet). The bit used for the Onedin Line theme was the Adagio.
If you want to hear the music for yourself, there's a brilliant RealPlayer audio clip here (only 3 mins 40sec)
http://www.boosey.com/pages/cr/composer/sample_detail.asp?sampleid=10364
which takes you all the way from the thundering rolling intro, and into the bit that will be familiar from the old TV series. There's also a lot more info about Khachaturian himself. Enjoy!
