The top of the center is not turning with the bottom part. when you push down on the center it starts to turn, but not when you let off

Its most likely to be the dogs. There are four of them inside the agitator. Dogs part # 80040 about $6. Or you can get the agitator repair kit part # 285811 for about $20. You can them at most sears parts repair centers. Take off the cap and remove the screw to take off the upper half of the agitator. Right there is the dogs and cam assembly. If the dogs no longer have little teeth on them, then that is the problem. This is most likely your problem. Hope this helps you out.

There is a centrifugal locking mechanism on the bottom of the agitator shaft. These break often. And are easy to fix. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's difficult to describe. But I fixed it on my washer. The part cost about $20.

Take it off and check to see if there is anything catching if that's not it there is a piece in the agitator itself ( at the narrow end) that may be cracked and needs to be replaced. Its easy to tap out and you can get a replacement at a appliance repair place.

Probably a broken belt move it out and take off the back and go to the appliance store Sears usually carries most brands of belts

for around 350.00 you can get a new washer that's what i would do
