My smoke alarms have gone off 2x this week, 1st when the furnace overheated (5:30am), 2nd when the kerosene fumes came through the walls (2:15am). Landlord for the property has a plumber working on the unit, but until it's fixed, what can I do. I own my house, but it's a twin so it's attached to the landlord's home. Do I have any rights to protect my house.....landlord could put "bad" tenants in for spite...any advice

I would remodel the adjoining wall so that the fumes could NOT come through again.. possibly an impermiable barrier sheet and a second wall inside the first one.. with good insulation for heat and sound (in case you later get bad neighbors)...

If your neighbor (landlord) is trying to fix the problem.. be patient.. just because it is a rental does not mean that the landlord has a lot of money to spend on getting it fixed properly.

First off the owner will not put in a bad tenant to spite you as that would hurt them far worse than it would hurt you.

I'd call the fire department, TOTALLY innocent as to what is causing your smoke alarm to go off. Be as concerned for your safety as you certainly should be. But rather than any stance of blaming just be focused on what you need to do to get safety.

The fire dept. will take it from there. They will explain the dangers etc. to the next door owner. In the meantime every time your alarm goes off call the fire dept. ultimately it's not your problem to solve so pass the buck right up the line. Then it becomes the nasty old fire department that won't allow the kerosene heater. Or they need to properly ventilate.

Best of luck,
