This is my first time filing taxes as an independent contractor. I'm trying to decide between 3 tax software titles:

$90 - TurboTax: Home&Business Edition
http://turbotax.intuit.com/tax_products/learn_home_business.jhtml

$80 - HR-Block: Home&Business Edition

$60 - HR-Block: Premium Edition

Which of these software titles would work best for a home run business? Also, should I use an e-file?

To the guy who posted answer #1: Deluxe edition of Turbo tax is if you DO NOT have a business. The Home&Business edition is what I'll probably need from Turbo Tax.

I would choose TurboTax. It is the most reliable and I find it to be the easiest to work with. You can also try to go to a local IRS walk-in site. They might be able to help you for FREE.

TurboTax is the best out of all the tax softwares on the market. If the business is simple, then TurboTax is good enough. No need to waste your money on HR Block. You won't find a good tax person unless you go to the Block premium office and ask for an EA. Don't even bother with the ones without EA certification. I've personally seen some self-employment returns prepared by HR Block and they either overstated deductions or omitted a few easy deductions.

TurboTax will explain to you each steps. It just gonna take some time.

Depending on the size of your business as well as the nature of your business I would recommend one of the following packages: 1 - Quickbooks 2 - Quicken 3 - Microsoft Money 4 - Microsoft Great Plains (med sized business w/ tax tracking) Most of these can be imported directly into TurboTax or HR Block's Rapid Refund Tax software. Each of the above softwares also allow you to set up recurring transactions (aka - estimated taxes) and assign them to payment groups which will be used in calculating your overall tax responsibility. If you need anything else, please feel free to contact me. I use Microsoft Money and really like the interface... but to each their own. Take care,

At those prices, I would go to a small CPA firm or an Enrolled Agent. You get peace of mind and they may even save you a few bucks on things you never thought of. The key is finding one who is open to using technology to get your accounting records from you in a clean state. that keeps fees down and the CPA/EA can concentrate more on giving useful advice rather than just crunching numbers.

Call a few CPAs or Enrolled Agents and get quotes.

You should use Turbo Tax Premier Investments. It has Sched. C and all the business forms. I've been using TT of years and love it. You can efile very easily, just with a clik of the mouse.

I recommend Turbo-Tax. I can't comment on H&R blocks, but I am self-employed, and Turbo-Tax was good for me. What you didn't ask is which edition of Turbo tax do you buy, you will need the Deluxe edition. Other editions won't have what you need.

Is there some way we're supposed to read your mind to know what would constitute "best"?
