My fish has an extremely swollen stomach and he floats to the top of the water. He tries to stay at the bottom but he just floats back up. However, he still has a very healthy appetite. Please help asap.

Could be constipation, could be swim bladder. They're very similar, in symptoms anyway. It's common in goldfish, but any freshwater fish can get it. Check out this site for symptoms and treatment. Mashed peas is good, but fast the fish for 3 days first. It could be caused by overeating/gulping air, bacteria, parasite, or it could be congenital. If it's anything but congenital, it can be cured with proper treatment. If it's congenital, it can't be cured. If your fish has had it this long without dying, it very well could be congenital and it may be finding a way to deal with it.

Feed your fish some cooked peas (without the skin), sometimes they help a digestive problem, and that sounds like what is wrong with your fish. Is it a fancy goldfish? They are prone to the swimbladder problems because of the way their bodies are.

If it is a parasitic problem, mix some finely minced garlic into the food. Use the garlic packed in water, not oil.

Some fish have lived for years with a swim bladder problem. Personally I think it would be absolute torture for a fish to have to live like that.

The best way to euthanize a fish is to use a few drops of oil of cloves in a small container and when it goes to sleep, put it in the freezer and freeze it. Don't flush a live fish, there is just crap down there, not enough water to allow them to swim, they just lay there and suffocate.

if its his stomach it is most likey swim bladder -- do the pea thing. don't euthanize the poor guy -- jeez.

just to make sure another bloated fish disease is called dropsy and its a nasty one. the whole fish swells up like a baloon and the scales stick out so it reminds people of a pinecone. this is treatable with an antibiotic if you catch it early.
