Yes, we are ready. The pendulum has swung in the direction of change from the status quo. I think most people get it that a woman could be president. Also, once people start scrutinizing Sen. Obama, they will find him a "less threatening" African-American male for two reasons. First, he is actually biracial, which I am sure will comfort some people on some level who need to relate to the president. Second, this same type of person will also be "comforted" by the fact that he is a child of an African immigrant, not a person whose entire Black American ancestry is tied to the horrific history of slavery, etc., in this country.

In short, Sen. Obama will be viewed as "different" from regular American Black people, so perhaps more acceptable.

Smart people will hear him and see the possibilities for change that transcend race and ethnicity.

What an interesting political landscape!!

I don't see why it would matter, personally I think that the reason we haven't had a female president or a non Caucasian President is because of Market Research. After all the two most important characteristics for a president are : Bank Balance and Media appeal.

seeing as two of the strongest democratic candidates fit this description, i hope the answer is yes.
I must admit, the idea of a woman leading the country seems a little strange right now, though i am ashamed to admit it.
A black president would be no big deal. Everyone loves obama, and there should be no differences between whites and blacks. On the other hand anyone can admit men and women are very different. We've seen black presidents on tv and grown to love them, so why not?

a female president right now no, in the future maybe,(i am a female) and i believe that if it was a decision to go to war(even though the president does not choose to go just announces it, would not be able to handle the concept, a president other than "white" i think they could do the job but the fear of racism might come back would be horrible. personally i would love to see a woman and a different "color(so to say?)" person make it to office. and I'm not saying that there isn't a woman out there that couldn't make the decision but probably not, and I'm not saying that if a different race couldn't go to office without ever having problems but even with the male "white" president these problems could still come.

a female president, I really dont think so, there would be way to many arm pulling. It would be the same as having a black president after lincolns assasination, no matter what he would do it would either be for the black man, or a traitor to his race. the same here appolies to women. if she is for aborion shes a feminazi and needs to be taken out, if shes pro life then shes a traitor to her sex and needs to be taken out.

as far as race is concerned now adays, I think we are ready. Bill Cosby for president!!!

My opinions are these:

I believe that no candidate who is qualified by ability and experience to serve as President of the United States, and whose heartfelt positions on the most important issues of public policy and national security resonate with the electorate, should be excluded from serious consideration merely because of his or her race or sex.

I also believe that no candidate who is unqualfied by ability and experience to serve as President of the United States, and whose heartfelt positions on the most important issues of public policy and national security have failed to resonate with the electorate, should be seriously considered merely because of his or her race or sex.

I can't put it any more plainly than that.

As a majority, yes this country is ready for this. It's just a matter of time. There will be a huge uprising of previous non-voters whom will come to vote just for this. Unfortunetly I believe there will probably be an assassination attempt, if not a success.

Unfortunately NO- BUT after these past 8 HORRIBLE years we just might turn around and surprise everyone. I personally like "the other than white" guy a lot. I'm not a fan of Hillary's but I thought her husband was a great president. NO MORE REPUBLICANS!

it's going to happen, sooner or later.

A Republican woman or non-white actually stands a better shot, in my opinion. Less likely to be demonized and pre-pigeon-holed on the issues.
