I've used PRNewswire in the past with some degree of success - are there other good ways of ensuring wide distribution / maximising media attention?

Additional details: You can ultimately email a written press release, but if you want to get it out quickly, you need to let them know it's coming.

Yes you could email this press release to various newspapers and press aides in the city. Google newspapers in your city and you will find a list, proceed from there.
