Gravel is shred rock. It is i think of the size of 5mm to 1or 2 cm size.
If you erode it more you will get sand that is around 1 mm.
The next step would be clay or silt depending on the composition of the soil.

Water is the eroding agent in general. Through displacement and erotion, rock slowly shrink down until they reach the sea.
