I can't insure my own flesh and blood children after age 18 (or 21 if they go to college). Why can people who aren't related, not married, insure each other, but I can't keep my kids on my insurance!?

I don't agree Colleen, partners come and go but your children are yours forever. Blood is thicker than water.

Yes, I think it is fair to be able to insure your domestic partner, however, I do not think it is fair that you can not continue to insure your children until they can get and afford their own insurance. If the world was perfect, we would be able to put who ever we wanted on our policies....mothers, fathers, out of work siblings, after all we are the ones paying the premiums!

This is different from state to state and job to job. Many insurance companies don't recognize domestic partners. I used to have United Health care at a previous job and they allowed this, now again at a new job I have U.H. and they don't allow this. Difference of less than three months between jobs. I have been w/ my girlfriend for seven years and she does have her own health care. My work would pay me if I would join her policy. Truth of the matter is blood may be thicker than water but just because we technically don't have the paper work that the government would like doesn't mean my relationship is not serious. If your children need health care they should continue schooling full time. Until they graduate they can use your coverage. After that this would probably not be a discussion.

I suggest you urge your children to stay in school. That way they will become more employable and more apt to get employment where they can get their own insurance through their employer. And YES I do think it is fair...Partners are working together as a team for the good of the "family" unit...children usually don't contribute all of the funds, and work necessary to keep a family afloat. I don't know many 18 year olds who can afford to own a home and be totally financially responsible for their parents. But partners, married or not very often are.

the definition of "fair" is what you want... don't forget that. And also keep in mind that companies that do the insuring are in it for the buckos. If you really want LIFE insurance for your children, you can get it. If you work for a company that offers HEALTH insurance to you, each large company has different options.... again, "fair" is what YOU want,,,,, But you can always get health insurance on your dependents.... it's just costly, hon. YOU might have to pay for it... rather than your company.... life is tuff, all over. Some states -- Ca. for one, is making health insurance available to all children.... Others will follow

How do they insure each other when they are not married? I did not know you could do that, but perhaps they are covered under common law marriage? And perhaps it basically makes them married when the person who puts them under their policy makes that commitment. Perhaps a liability takes place as soon as that happens by admission of a close relationship in the financial arrangement? The then boyfriend/girlfriend then takes on a legally binding relationship. They probably can't do this to two people like that!

Being that they are legally grown, you would have to put them on a separate insurance that they would have to sign. Couple who are not married have to do the same or they are named the beneficiary of the policy. My sister has insurance for my brother, so it is possible to have insurance but not on the same policy.

No its not fair i completely agree with you. i think it should be your choice who you want to insure. i mean it is your money you should be able to spend it how you want/ Hilary clinton asked about health insurance and how it should change on yahoo answers maybeyou should look for her question and tell her your problem. she just posted it not to long ago you should be able to answer i did today

maybe you and a friend could 'kid swap' on paper and make the domestic partner out of each other's kids...
