it MUST be Denser than water
otherwise it would be impossible to measure complete displacement without intereference
you have to get the stupid thing below the surface of the water without touching it, so yes it is pretty much essential
unless you hold it at just below the surface, but it will not be 100% accurate
also, it cannot dissolve or react with water
