If you're planning on sticking with it and not just experimenting, start out with a decent guitar--don't buy something from Walmart or Target if you want a good starter guitar. I would recommend a Seagull for an acoustic, and either an Epiphone or a Fender if you wanted to go electric. I would see if you could find a teacher somewhere to give you lessons--trust me, it works SO much better than trying to teach yourself. Practice every day and stick with it and you'll be playing music in no time. Good luck!

I play the guitar and I believe that private lessons are always better than trying to learn from books...

It would depend on how much they knew about music to start off with.

For example, if you want to read guitar music, you should learn about tablature [tabs, see link below] and barre chords [commonly misspelled to 'bar chords'. Again, see below].

However, theory and technicality are often what can ruin your enthusiasm and interest; I would suggest to anyone really wanting to learn to begin just by messing around, trying out famous tunes and riffs without music, just by working them out on the fretboard.

Obviously, anyone considering guitar playing seriously would probably want to arrange lessons with a professional :)

Three things, first take lessons. Second it hurts, you need to build up calluses. Third, you'll sound bad for the first six months so be ready to practice a lot and don't get discouraged. Good luck.

Hello,

You need to toughen your fingertips, cut your nails, and have good dexterity with your fingers. Then you need to find a guitar you like, music you like, a good place and time to practice, and go for it.

Good luck and Enjoy!

How to play. Get an instructor, or learn yourself using the internet, a book, or a CD.

If I had stuck with my lessons, I would have a rock group by now but I gave up after 3 lessons, lol.

Don't get frustrated, stick to it.

Your fingers will hurt at first, but after a while they'll stop hurting as you develop calluses.
