They were born approx 2 yrs ago and have lived together. They have always got along but two of them had a bad fight approx 2 weeks ago, both were bleeding from the neck down. i seperated them for 24 hours then re introduced in the bath and put the cage in so they could escape if neccessary. They have been fine and ate and slept together since. But again they have had another fight, why has this happened. they have had enough food & water. After the last time I have bought toys and chew so they can not get bored & I cannot see a reason why they have fought.
I have now seperated them but one of them will have to live alone.
Can they live alone?
Why did the fight start?
When can i re introduce them?

I would keep them seperated. My boyfriend had hamsters and the exact same thing happened. One of them actually almost killed the other. It won't hurt them to live alone, and it will be better than worrying about them fighting.

The problem could also be that their cage is too small and they're feeling crowded. Perhaps a larger cage is in order, so they're not always in eachother's hair.

Unfortunately, hamsters and gerbils sometimes don't get along with other members of their species, as they can be territorial. Your safest option would be to keep these two separated from now on, although they may get lonely. Just make sure you give them plenty of attention every day.
