You didn't say what kind of footwear your partner wears when he goes on these long walks. One suggestion is that he reviews his current footwear and the other is that he wears a support band in that area.

Since ligaments take a very long time to heal and broken/damaged bones can cause problems later on, it makes sense that he gives the area attention by way of gentle massage as a new habit.

obviously long walks are causing pain therefore reduce walking to avoid the pain.

it's best after an accident of any kind to gradually build up exercise routines that involve putting pressure on the damaged part of the body - afterall every time you exercise a damaged part and you experience pain the body needs time to heal.

Perhaps then long walks are too long so try shortening them and then gradually make your walks longer - give your body time to heal!!

I know this sounds silly but ice packs in the sock can help. Apparently it stops the tissues swelling and keeps the blood flowing smoothly reducing inflamation. Cant imagine its too nice hiking with a cold ankle but it might just work
