I work with a friend who is vastly underpaid. I want to let our boss know about some nice things she did for me lately without making myself look incompetent. She taught me how to use a certain database, she reminded me to update our website and a few other things. I don't want to sound sappy or ridicuous. Any suggestions?

That is one thing you should not do. The employee has to have the competence to ask the boss personally. Before the boss gives an answer he or she might ask fellow employees some questions. But most important is the boss' satisfaction with her job performance. On time, doesn't use the phone for personal calls, etc.

Your friend should be the one to talk to the boss. She will need to justify the raise.
