Easiest way is to do this without a router and simply connect the Ethernet (RJ42) cable from the back of your xbox straight to the ethernet port on the back of your pc - it automatically configures itself and you do not have to worry about IP add's or anything else - its fool proof. I connected mine up this way and was up and running in a matter of mins.
Only problem I can forsee is if your PC is an older one and there is no ethernet port on it. If this is the case you will need to connect via a router and apply the correct settings accordingly.
For help on this go to www.tiscali.co.uk and they have a guide to et you do this step by step.

If, from what I garnered out of your rant your Xbox RROD'd, then you definately can mail it to Microsoft and that they're going to restoration it for loose. it particularly is going to purely fee you a optimal of $5 for delivery. of path, you need to end it to me, besides. Or commerce it to Gamestop to maintain you some money.

Pretty sure theres an option that says manual configuration or automatic config. If its manual change it to auto and you should be done.
