Neverwinter Nights series (Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 plus expansion packs). Many similarities with Diablo LOD. You play a single character (not trying to manage a party of characters). You can a hire a single companion. Basically a 2D games with 3D looking sprites. Fantasy based. Choice of character types (various types of fighters and magic users). Hand-to-hand and range combat.
And best of all there is a Demo, so you can try it for free and see if you like it.

If you like the Diablo series, you will LOVE the Baldur's Gate series( for the PC. The console ones were abbysmal)
Diablo was my favorite game of all time, untill I played Baldur's Gate.
Another game that resembles Diablo, and is made by the creators of Baldur's Gate, is Neverwinter Nights. Although NWN isn't the greatest single player game, like BG, it more than makes up for it with it's amazing multiplayer, that allows you to create your own world or play in somebody else's custom one with them.
NWN is 3D though, while Baldur's Gate is 2D.

If you like diablo then you should try warcraft 3 frozen throne. It's a real time stratedgy game where you make units and command your army to destroy enimies. Mostly though people love to make maps.Top down view with a map editor and ranked matches, custom games, free play, and a ladder just like diablo.

Sacred on PC. It is REALLY FUN. Only $10 at Wal-Mart ;). Though I don't know if you'd consider it 3D. Also Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms on PS2 are great games.
