Because the politicians whipped up patriotism. Before the war started there was quite a worry among the ruling elites that British workers would refuse to fight German workers etc and that a war would lead finally to a socialist anti-war revolution in any country which tried to fight. A leading German said that once they (the workers) heard the drums and bugles, there would be no problem - and he was right. People will do the most foolish things.

Before TV there was little to be excited about. The weather in Central Europe sucks. That's why the Germans are so grumpy. The French have good wine and the Germans wanted it. France also has better weather. Archduke Ferdinand killed millions of animals and with the animal lovers and hunters being split 50-50 war was inevitable. The English had a big navy and WWI was a chance to use it. Wilhelm and Georgie always fought as buys and in 1914 Grandma Victoria was no longer around to make peace. You know how kids act when their parents aren't watching.

Because everyone was so nationalistic back then and each person believed there country was the best in the world.Even more stupid was the belief that the war would end by christmas time of the same year,btw it started on july 28,1914.

The heads of most men and women was filled with a bunch of nonsense of chivalric romance. WWI was their wake-up call.
