System restore can be found in the control panel or by right clicking on MY COMPUTER, then properties, then the System Restore tab. Make sure that it's enabled there.

You can use it to set the computer to save the settings and some files and then GO BACK IN TIME to get them back if something goes wrong.

Now keep in mind it's only great for system issues, like your download a piece of crap software and all of a sudden you can't use Ms-Paint. But it won't save all of your files, it's not meant for that.

You have to use a back up program to either back everythign on CD, DVD or Hard Drive.

System Restore is only for emergencies and can hide viruses if enabled so use with Caution.

Have a DVD drive? Just copy what you need.

Have an external Drive? Copy you drive there once a week.

you go to start menu control panel, (i'm assuming you have windows XP) and click preformance and mantanace and it should be on the left side if you don't see it go to start menu all programs and accessories, system tools and it should be in there. you will not have to save any files, system restore on changes the settings and programs in stalled on your computer. for example if you have a word document and you do a system restore to a date before you saved it it will still be there. when you do this restore thing it will bring upa calender that shows a list of restore date, choose one that was before the point in time when your co0mputer got messed up, or some went wrong or what ever your case is.
