In the first place don't take that suggestion to burn some paper first to "get it started" it just might. What's going to happen if the fire will take off up the chimney. I lived on the Minnesota/Canadian border and heated with wood for 30 years, in winters that hit 50 below or more. I know what a chimney fire is like, I lost my house to one because of a stupid renter that wouldn't listen.
You can purchase burning logs that will burn the creosote out of the pipes. Look up the chimney with a mirror and see how bad it is. I also used a small ball of barbed wire with a chain and brick for weight to pull up and down the chimney to clean it.
$50.00 may be cheap for a chimney sweep but when it's once a week, it gets expensive.
Your wood is wet (green) it should be mostly hardwood and dried for two years, I always keep one year ahead of myself. Use the soft wood in the daytime and keep a hot fire, at night hardwood and it burns longer. It doesn't hurt to keep a few flares around to put a fire out in case one starts, get them at Home Depot.

Yes they clog.. particularly fast if you are burning something you shouldnt be (pine for instance or trash) The chimney needs to be cleaned at last once a year minium (brush clean not that CLR log crap) This is a serious issue you run the risk of a chimney fire and burning down your house in fact

I have one too. Mine gets clogged sometimes. One night everythings fine and the next my house is filling with smoke. My father came over and had to climb up on the roof and use that long stick thing to clean the soot because it builds up in the chimney. My friend paid $50 for someone to come and do the same thing.

Barometric pressure and temperature the flu does need to be cleaned once a year but it usually is due to weather just try the burning paper first to get the draft going some times up the chimney then build your fire.

I bet your chimney is on a outside wall instead of in the inside, take some newspaper and burn it 1st to move your cold air out,2 or 3 pieces, once your chimney is warmed up she'll draw nicely, OR go and check maybe you did get a animal like a bird or squirrel in it.

Burning low cool fire Will cause creosote to build up in the flu. If this is the case it can be a real fire hazard. chimney fires can easily burn houses down. Better take a look up or down the chimney.
