I sometimes notice intensive network activity lasting several minutes, when I am not manually downloading or having any update notification. How can I know what is going on?

I am not doing any file sharing and I regularly scan the computer with AntiVir and Windows Defender, which are constantly on.

This could be happening for a number of reasons. First go on and do a virus scan and spy ware scan like someone else has said. Also download a firewall like Zone Lab. Zone Lab will tell you when something is connecting with the Internet and let you know the program trying to go out or who if anyone is trying to get in. The network activity could also be due to having something running on your computer with an auto update feature, ie. windows auto update, anti virus updates or other software.

i used to notice this and to be honest i was getting paranoid thinking i was being hacked into, however these fears were soon laid to rest when i installed a decent firewall which is designed to monitor network activity
a good free firewall is zone alarm(http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp),this wont let any unauthorised access to your p.c unless you allow it,ok it may be a bit annoying at first when it asks you to allow or block each program but it remembers these and will not ask again
p.c,s are allways going to be connecting to the internet for tasks such as windows update, virus defenition updates, java updates, defender defenitions, the list is endless, but anything that shouldnt be allowed on your p.c will be stopped by the firewall
obviously a good anti-virus and anti-spyware should be installed also, and weekly scans should be run.
finally keep all security software updated,a out of date anti-virus scanner is as much use as none at all.
i hope this helps you and dont worry, zone alarm will sort out this problem
good luck

You may well have a key-logger installed - dispatching info back to a remote server for whatever purpose.
Try running this application and it will tell you if you have and if any of the applications are dangerous.
It could of course all be auto updates for other apps that you have loaded but these days it's better to be safe than sorry(very expensive)
Good luck!

You might have file sharing programs installed in your computer. I experience the same, if none, you might be receiving automatic updates from an unknown source. As long as your computer's security features is on and working, nothing really to worry...

Many installed programs have automatic updates that you may have enabled. They periodically check and download data as needed.

Do you download movies from Sky? They use your computer for file-sharing without telling you.
