where can i get a desktop shortcut icon?

For what? All you need to do to create a desktop icon for a program is to right click on the program, create shortcut, and drag it to your desktop.

A desktop icon for what application?

The norm would be to find the application in the start menu..
Right-Hand Click
Click create shortcut

If the Icon does not go to the desktop but goes below the Item you clicked then simply drag it to the desktop.
