The brain electrically signals muscles to move. Muscles are fed by blood carrying oxygen and nutrients (mostly proteins). But muscles also need Potassium and other nutrients to function well.

The energy used by muscles is the same energy used almost everywhere else in the body: adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Muscles at their most fundamental level are made up of actin and myelin filaments and what starts a contraction is a message from the nervous system. The resulting molecular cascade allows tropomyosin to move, but this can only happen in the presence of ATP.
