I'm running XP Pro on a Pentium III at 664 MHZ with 128 MB RAM with high speed Internet (Cable). The machine works fine but the web pages seem awful slow... several second delays for a page to load. Is this a result of all the firewall/virusscan/security etc. and Windows updates? Or is this machine so old that I can't expect better performance and I have to just buy a new machine? Some other factor (s)?
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

Contrary to what most people will tell you, your PC is more than fast enuff to browse the web. Virus protection, ad and spyware, too many applications running, and last but not least, your ISP will all have an effect on your speed.

I also have Cable internet and was using an older machine similar to yours up till last summer. Ultimately everything plays some kind of a role in the overall speed that you see. I saw a HUGE speed increase with my new computer. The old one was def slowing me down. It does kinda suck to pay for the speed and not really be able to use it as much as you could be.

If your machine is still working good for you, than dont worry too much. When you are ready and when you really need a new computer, than get one. I promise you 'll see the difference!

there may be a delay with a slow computer, but after it starts to load it should go fast. if it loads little bits of the page at a time then there is probably a virus or spyware on your computer.
the computer is not unreasonably slow as long as your not doing too many things at once, the thing that is killing you is the lack of ram 128 is nothing. if you think you want to buy more ram i wouldn't bother unless you can find some really cheep stuff. if you can't just buy a new computer. a good bandwidth checker is www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

There are a few things you should check.
www.ipchicken.com
Check your connection speed.
Then check to see how much Ram all those process' are using by going to Task manager and click on memory.

Run disk cleanup to erase any files that don't belong.

Last but not least download system mechanic from www.iolo.com

it will tune up your pc and make things just plain work.

You should expect a good speed with the specs that you provided, although with that amount of ram you may want to suspend the virus scan and everythign else you don't need....

Change your display settings to best for performance and not looks. This will free up at least a 30 megs of ram
