Europeans are more open minded on sex education

Yes, because, well, at least here in the US, it was more scare tactics than actual facts, for my education anyway. One interesting study would be to look at the ratio of 18-25 year olds or something with STD's in the states and europe. We all know how much more nudity and sexual scenarios are on tv in europe. Does it really make people so sex crazy? I doubt it.

sex in America is a strange animal. First, you can't turn on the TV or look at a billboard without seeing sex, there is propaganda out our buttts about STDs and birth control. Yet at home, where the most important learning we get, sex is taboo. I am one messed up cat due to the total lack of discussion about sex as a young person. I am so obsessed with sex that it has become unhealthy. All it would have taken is a half hour discussion with dear ol dad about this crap and maybe I'd have been a more sane person.

Well I wrote my senior research thesis on sex education in our public school system. Unfortunately because of George W. Bush's own personal religious beliefs, our children are suffering as a result. Schools are denied funding for teaching anything other than abstinence only education, which as we all know DOES NOTHING except HURT teenagers. They are going to have sex NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO or what your stupid religion says. It's time to take religious beliefs out of the classroom as they have absolutely NO business being there in the first place. Our sex education system in teh US blows to put it mildly. As this is something I researched for over a year, I can say without even knowing anything about the UK, that whatever you have is far better than what we have here because at least in UK the kids are at least being educated. Here our version of sex education involves telling kids they will go to hell if they have sex, and that the only way to be safe is to not have sex at all. So all they do is scare kids which makes them engage in even riskier activities. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to teenage sex. The more information they have the better able they are to make decisions. We can't regulate their bodies and the fact that we try to says volumes about the intelligence level of the man elected to serve as president of this country. Teenage sex is here to stay and we need to realize that and do everything we can to be sure that when they finally made that leap they have all the tools necessary to ensure they are having the safest sex possible!

I don't know about sex education in Europe, but kids from Europe tend to have a more mature attitude about sex. Just my observation.

At least where I live(in the US) there is a real sex education course in 6th grade. Its done in their Science class. Parents have to sign a paper allowing their child to participate during that part of the Science course which is three weeks long. I'm one parent who has really educated their child about sex so I signed the paper allowing my child to take part. Even with all the information I gave my child before hand there was still things I didn't think to tell my child. I have an open communication with my child so when she wanted to tell me what she was learning in class or she wanted to ask me a question she has done so. I don't know what Europe has but it can't be better then what we have here(where I live at least). It appears that we are in the minority concerning the USA.

Let me add that the course isn't just sperm meets egg, etc.... but it covers different types of sex, birth control(including abstinence), Stds, etc.................. I like the course because there was a few things I didn't think to tell my child. It covered those few things I forgot. AND it has not made my child want to go out and have sex. In fact, she thinks sex is gross.

Look, I don"t see why there is such an obsession with "sex education".After all you learn about sex when you grow up.It"s like learning how to eat .Children shouldn"t have sex education at school. It confuses them and thrusts them into a world which can be really pernicious for them. Some may say that SE prevents girls from getting pregnant.Just teach children to follow the 10 commandments and you won"t have that problem!!

VERY!!!! in America sex seems to be "TA-BU" but in Europe..it is a natural thing, not hidden or covered up....in Europe to see people changing clothes at a public pool is no biggie....billboards with women in thong underwear was no big deal.....

if you set a cookie jar in front of someone and tell them there is something great inside it...but they are not to touch it....what are they most likely to do?

I don't know what it's like in America but I'm in Ireland, I'm graduating this year and we've never even had sex ed! we've had a couple of talks where they try to talk about it but then they just start talking about alcohol and drug abuse. we've never had one full talk on STIs, pregnancy or anything like that-it's ridiculous. a girl in my year had a baby and the teachers only congratulated her and nothing else was said probably because they didn't want to seem old fashioned or something-its unbelievable
