The Spanish word ***** originates from the Latin word niger, meaning black. In English, ***** or neger became negar and finally ******, most likely under influence of French nègre (also derived from the Latin niger).

There is still a country in Africa called, Niger - pronounced with a soft "g," and with the accent on the second syllable. I think our society just mispronounced and therefore, changed it.

You are right, that it comes from the word "*****."
According to American Heritage Dictionary, bartleby.com
"ETYMOLOGY: Alteration of dialectal neger, black person, from French nègre, from Spanish *****. See *****."
Although not related to the word "*********," wrongful associations have led to controversial censure over this
word as well, mistaken as a racial slur:
