Hmm, I would suggest trying the 5 "R's" witch is Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, and Restrore. Just go here:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
Its really helpful if you having problems with the ipod.
Also make sure of the little things like headphones plugged in all the way, volume up, hold switch not on etc.
Hope you get it working again!

First, try turning it off, then on again and seeing if it will play.

If that doesn't work, it may be necessary to repair the device. Connect it to your computer, when the iPod screen comes up on iTunes, click Repair. This will return the device to factory settings, which includes removing all the music. After that is done, re-upload your music. Hopefully, your iPod will then work.

The format probably isn't the issue. There are about five formats that work with iPods (including mp3, aiff and aac), if your music is in the wrong format, it wouldn't be in your iTunes library or on your iPod.

Not sure but did you download music from the Internet? Because I found out that you can get a virus on the ipod. You have to call customer service to have them to repair oops not repair it but they will have to replace it with a new one that's what happen to my friend she downloaded lots of music from the Internet and caught a virus they replace it.

it could be either your jack for the earphones or the female jack in the ipod but i'd go to apple.com to check

check apple's troubleshooting website. It may just need to be reset. There are instructions there on how to do that.
