I would rather have a better second hand than a mediocre new one but I've lost touch with considered good and what to avoid.
I don't want to spend a fortune but want something i can get some milage from.

Squire Strats/Teles are good, but I'd go with the other bods & recommend a Yamaha Pacifica 112. If you pick one up secondhand you should be able to afford a set of really good pick-ups, like Seymour Duncans, or DiMarzio. Then you'll ROCK!

I would spend a little more, but if you can't, those Yamaha pacifica's are good apparently.
Don't forget to save some bunce for a tidy VALVE amp, makes all the difference.

a yamaha pacifica. i own 5 guitars and out of the lot this is the best and the cheapest

I would consider getting a regular guitar you see i have a guitar where if i want to just play regular i can but i want it to be loud i can plug it up !!!! there's my idea
