Terrible thing about it..you cant do anything. Rest and take it easy. Make sure you take care of yourself during the healing time and (i know it sounds crazy) wash your hands often. The last thing you want is to get a cold and have an awful cough.

Are you assuming the rib is broken, or did you get an x-ray? I would try a large, long ace bandage to help relieve some of the pain as I am sure the cage expands when you take a deep breath. The outside lining of the lung could be most of your pain..

it is about the same as when I broke my tailbone completely in too. I walked around for about eight weeksw feeling as if I had a baseball inside me. I got a serious infection after the fall "prostatis", along with an UTI awhich is not that common in men. I fell so hard on my backside that I jarred my internal organs. How the Dr. knew that is beyound me, however; with a fall I had he said I may have damages , mthe liver, and kidneys.
He is probably right as I have a "cyst" on my kidney, and also the liver, plus along with that prostate cancer...

You will need a chest x-ray to be sure. There are 2 way's that I know of. If the rib is not displaced, where a jagged edge might rub up against the lung or pleura and cause bleeding or lung puncture, the treatment is rest, pain meds, and an ice-pack for 24 hrs. Then apply a heating pad for healing, for several days if its still uncomfortable.Follow up with your MD. Some Doc's prefer using a "rib-belt" to support the chest wall, rest of treatment is the same. Stop the contact sports until your rib is healed. Take care. SW RNP

10/14/06....I was in a very severe car accident. Induced coma with multiple injures besides my fractured ribs. I was in ICU. I had a Cat Scan done and Chest X-rays ....I had several multiple fractured ribs...They still hurt. I am on Vicodine still. And the other party who I was with also has multiple fractured ribs. He is on Darvacet due to Vicodine keeps him up. I cant inhale....It hurts o both sides still. So it may take up to at least 4 - 6 months if not longer. It is going to take time. so take it easy and rest. No boxing until it heals up.
Go get a chest x - rays and a cay scan done. Just go to the DR and get some pain medicine. Did you see an orthopedic? Be careful it doesn't puncture a lung. Sometime they tape you up and even use a ace band age.

They used to tape these all around the chest and had a fair incidence of pneumonia. Tape on one side might help. If you have trouble breathing or spit up blood see someone quickly. These take a long time to heal. I broke two a few years ago and had to rig up a rope system so I could pull myself out of bed in the morning. A heating pad helped at night. During the day if i coughed, I had to lean the fractured ribs against the wall to avoid excruciating pain. It does go away, but slowly.

Not rather whatever you'll do instead of maintain him relaxed by way of wrapping it and giving him Motrin for the anguish. If he's going to cough or sneeze inform him to maintain a pillow tightly to the field so it will not do any harm as a lot. Also use ice packs for 20 mins on then 20 mins off to support the swelling. If he will get a bloodless whilst his bis are medication don't wrap the field considering that if the ribs are damaged he might not be equipped to breath good and might get pneumonia for this reason. Even if he went to the medical institution they could most effective do what you could have been doing after which cost you a fortune for the consult with. It will take decades to heal, possibly one million to two months. Good success and I would possibly not even cost you a co-pay ;)

Unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about a broken rib. Splinting your side with a pillow while you cough will help decrease the pain.

You could possibly wrap your rib cage but that will do nothing to stop the pain. Take plenty of ibuprofen and don't do anything that will cause a malunion.

nothing you can do but get rest and take pain killers. Unless it punctured a lung, there is nothing you can do.
