Yes, that happens very often, but esp. in schools. & keep in mind some young people deliberately make musical choices in order to fit into X clique.

The major problem is the media, who seem to like putting everyone under little labels. The 'emo' and 'rocker' labels are just convienient ways of describing music and its fans. Then the typical stereotypes begin to gather round the labels, and anyone who is associated with it gets tarred with the same brush.
A good example, and one which people forget, is the stereotyping of Joy Division fans. I am a Joy Division fan, and the view of most people is that the music is depressing and that fans of the band are depressive miserable and even suicidal.
Many terms used in music were invented by the media. It could also be argued that music now has developed from something you listen to into a culture/lifestyle choice- you don't just listen to a particular sort of music but you LIVE it. This has pretty much always been the case. You only need to look at the recent Goth culture or even the 70s punks to see this. The image and influence of artists has gone beyond simply a voice to a person who can be seen. It is more likely then that a fan will be influenced by that artist for a lot of things. The whole stereotyping then becomes an easy way for people to understand the group as a whole, and like anything the truth is often mixed in with misunderstandings and stories.
So yes music is stereotyped.

Yeah i do think that people are often stereotyped according to the music they listen to....which is something i totally disagree with, cuz in my humble opinion, i dont think that you can judge a person by any one thing they do or say. People have so many sides, and are ever changing, so i just dont think it is possible profile a person just by a couple of songs they happen to like.

But like i said, this is just my opinion.

sure, i mean if you dress in someway, your music is immediately known, if you're young you're supposed to listen punk and rock or be rebel, but if you're old you're supposed to conform with the Beatles and Elvis
