I'd say on the one hand the majority of people in the world care what others think of them...my job depends on what others think of me and how I conduct myself, not only on my job but on my own free time.
Self-centered people or people with low self-esteem are in a different category. Self-centered are immature and shallow, they want and need to be the center of attention to make themselves feel good, these people are usually laughed at or ignored for being ridicules. Low self-esteem need others guidence, or think they do anyway, just to fit in, it is hard for them to be themselves for fear of people making fun of them.

I care about what other people think about me too much. I know that it is from my background where I was always under a lot of criticism no matter what I did and my parents always wanted me to act a certain way before others so I would reflect well on them. It is very hard to get over as much as I want too and I am learning. My husband is the opposite almost to a fault and I think that is one thing that attracted me to him. I get a big kick out of him and have learned a lot. I've learned you can't let other people determine what you do and you have to be yourself and speak up for yourself.

Its Human Nature! Even the most secure people like to know how people feel or think about them. Now when I say human nature I mean that people generally like to feel accepted or else they are the outcasts...and what better way to find out if you are accepted than asking how people think about them?
Like my favorite Psyc professor says...there are five essential/basic human needs: food, water, sleep, SAFETY and sex. Once ALL have been satisfied--and there is a balance--that's when people normally don't give a damn what others think. (ok, so he reinvented Maslow's Hierarchy of needs but its pretty much the same stuff).

Because it is an age old thing. We want people to like us and not judge us, so we tend to try and live our lives by the book. Some people couldn't care less what people think of them, and thats fair enough if they have nothing to be ashamed of, or nothing to blacken their good name. But the ones who do all the wrong things in life and claim that they don't care what people think of them, are only saying this because they have no other way of justifying their wrongdoings.

Because it is normal, and an essential part of being human. The less you care about other people, the deeper is your degree of alienation. If you don't care about people at all, you are severely neurotic, as even apes care about each other.

I don't know. My mom taught me how to not care. She told me that you can't live life living it up to everyone else's standards, cause you'll never be happy. I guess they care cause of stereotyping. It's pathetic- not the people that are insecure, but the people that stereotype. By the way, cute pic! I love guinea pigs.

the people who say that they don't care what other people say or think about them are usually lying. everyone to one degree or another cares what others think of them. some people go to the extreme of bending over backwards to make people like them. I call these people doormats. everyone wants to be accepted by somebody, it is just how we are.

Perhaps it's because they're insecure about themselves, especially when it comes to one's looks.
