that is human nature, to compete, and we use our sex to define our team in this case i suppose, though you are right, what are we battling about, we need each other at the end of the day.

I hate to be confusing, but there is no one answer to that question. Depending upon context and history, the "battle of the sexes" has meant many very different things. In one instance it is a literal battle for superiority in a position such as work. In some cases men are fighting to keep jobs or worse to prevent women from getting them. By the same token, women are fighting to get jobs or keep them. They are doing so in a very gender biased manner.
In another context, the "battle of the sexes" refers to courtship. It sounds odd, but it's true. According to history, there is a "battle" between men and women regarding the more biological nature of courtship. Historically women try to keep their "virtue" while men try to take it.
In yet another context, the battle of the sexes refers to people poking fun at some of these notions. These situations are serious. The sexual revolution in courtship and in the business world are not over. History shows that a "battle of the sexes" has been going on as long as history has been recorded. It has even infiltrated homes. Have you heard the question, "Who wears the pants in your family?" It goes back to a power struggle. Sometimes the struggle is in jest. Other times it can turn deadly. It is sad, but true....domestic violence.
There are other contexts, but I think that is enough for now. Good question. I hope you find what you wanted.

Who says we are? The "battle of the sexes" is a term that should have died out with the ERA movements of the 70's. We are mutually weak and mutually strong. We have a balance of needs that work to ensure the survival of the species. If there was such a battle chances are it ended in a tie.

We are battling because we don't really understand each other. We are very different in the way we communicate and the needs we would like to have fulfilled.
We three things in common. We want to be respected, valued, and loved.

Part of the problem is that men and women see reality in totally different ways.
That is how our brains are wired.
The misunderstandings start because we don't understand that and assume that the opposite sex has the same thinking processes that we do.
The man says something that to him is totally innocent, and the woman walks off in a huff.
"What did I do. What did I do." and honestly he doesn't know.

Males and females are two completely different things. I don't get guys. They obviously don't get us. That's why they call it that.
