Alone again Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan It is an oldie but....Heres the lyrics if you want
In a little while from now, if I'm not feeling any less sour I promised my self to treat myself and visit a nearby tower and climbing to the top would throw myself off in an effort to make it clear to whoever what it's like when your shattered left standing in a l..at a church where people say my God that's tough she stood him up no point in us remaining we may as well go home as I did on my own Alone again naturally. It seems that only yesterday I was cheerful bright and gay looking forward to well who wouldn't do the role I was about to play but as if to knock me down reality came around and without so much as a mere touch cut me into little pieces leaving me to doubt talk about God and his mercy who if he really does exsist why did he desert me in my hour of need I truely am indeed alone again naturally. IT seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world that can't be mended lefte unattended what do we do what do we do. Looking back over the years at whateverelse that appears I remember I cried when my father died never wishing to hide the tears and at 65 yrs old my mother god rest her sould didn't understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken leaving her to starve with her heart so badly broken dispite encouragement from me no words were ever spoken and when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again naturally

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams
Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry
I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry
Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That mean's he's lost his will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry
The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Not going to happen, we all empathise with different things, It'll be a song about the end of a love affair for some, like "No Regrets" or songs about death "Seasons in the Sun" (Who the hell said it was by the Beatles????) Others think whining about a Gorilla is tear jerking.. As Abe Lincoln said, you can fool some of the people....
For me it's aggadoo by Black Lace, can't get sadder than that ;-)

The Eric Clapton one he wrote when his little son died. 'Tears in Heaven' or something. Alot of Eva Cassidy songs make me want to cry, 'Fields of Gold' etc. Most songs that are beautifully sung and written will make you bawl if you're in the right mood. Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' has made me cry on occasion too, it's so sad ...

two songs that come to mind - EVERYBODY HURTS by R.E.M. and a song from my country South Africa during the late 60's THE STACCATOS sang it : CRY TO ME. A Superb song and when you feel lonely and alone and you play that song you certainly feel VERY VERY SAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I do believe that somehwere I heard on the radio that R.E.M. song was chosen as the saddest song ever. Do not know whether it is true.
OF COURSE I just saw that caryl l said Old Tige by Jim reeves. I have to say YES YES YES to him. it is a superb beautiful little song and I cry everytime I hear it. Good to you caryl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am an old lady but I always remember "I'm the little boy that Santa Claus forgot" And when I ever hear it or even think about it I can still feel emotion and Yes tears well up into my eyes. I wonder how many people reading this would even know it or remember..

In terms of sad, I don't think anything can remotely compare to 'Strange Fruit' by Billie Holliday. It describes the strange fruit, which are the bodies of black people hung by KKK style lynch mobs in the deep south in the years of the depression. Listen to this and you will find it puts Gilbert O'Sullivan, Eric Clapton and Sir Elton John rather nicely in perspective.
