can you get "bottom cleaners (feeders)" for goldfish? someone told me that lionheads would eat a cory catfish but also im pretty sure they can only be in tropical water right? does anyone else have some sort of bottom feeder in with their goldfish or should i just let it be as they should dig around and eat the old food-not always a good thing i would think.... or just get some stupid snails??

goldfish are bottom feeders, no need for another fish and most of the bottom feeders will hurt your goldfish

No, catfish are not a good companion fish to goldfish. The most compatible fish for goldfish are: Dojo (Weather Loach) likes temps 64-77F, Ph 6.8 to 7.0; Apple Snails, temps 65-82F, Ph 6.5-8; Rubbernose Pleco, temp 68 - 73 F, Ph 6.5-7.5; Hillstream
Loach, temp 65-75 F, Ph 6.5 - 7.6; BristleNose Pleco, temp 73-80 F, Ph 7.0 - 7.6; and Dwarf Otocinclus, temp 68-79 F, Ph 5.0-7.5 (not for beginners though). If you choose to get a bottom feeder, get one that is smaller than the goldfish as, if they are bigger, they might try to "suck" on the goldfish and they can eat off their slime coat. Also, plecos can get big, so you have to allow another 10 gallons of water to the aquarium size for this extra fish (plus, of course, allowing 10 gallons minimum per goldfish). Once a week you need to be siphoning out of the bottom all of that "old food," that you say you have. Also, just as a correction comment, goldfish tanks need a 25% water change every week and it is better to underfeed goldfish than overfeed. Feeding once a day is sufficient.

You could try to find a cold water catfish, like a channel cat or a bullhead, I know several people the keep only native fishes and these guys do just fine in large aquaria, but be aware that they will eventually get large enough to eat goldfish. Also there may be a problem with releasing them back into the wild when they get too large (against the law in some states) Come to think of it,you should check into your states laws about keeping game fish. Hope there's an answer in this for you.-----PeeTee

I doubt lionheads would eat a cory. The goldfish are pretty slow and those cories can move when they want to. Lionheads, like all of their goldfish relatives, don't require tropical water. In fact, they are usually happier in cooler (~65°F) water.

Choose snails for cleaning smaller tanks. You might consider a plecostamus ("algae eater") for a larger tank.

You can put catfish or pleco's in your tank. You want to stay away from the snails. Goldfish love to eat snails. Also remember to clean your tank once a month and don't overfeed. Goldfish should get fed 2X's daily. Just a pinch each time.

Snails are more versatile for a fishbowl or aquarium that isn't heated. Goldfish are the dirtiest fish you can get so there is lots to eat.
