My son is 17 years old and at college and gets £30 a week EMA money as long as He attends all sessions. I claim child benefit and child tax credits.
I am disabled on disability benefits, also receive income support. I like to keep on the right side of the law, hence this is why I am asking this question.
Out of the benefits for him, I provide for all his needs etc, clothing food, tools for college etc
He wants to take on a part time job to help with his car insurance and tax etc as it is going to cost him quite a bit. I feel terrible that I cannot pay for all his insurance etc as the insurance itself is at least £1,000.
What worries me is, if he takes a part time job will his child benefit and or tax credits be removed or reduced. If he can work part time while at college, are there any restrictions on hours and or pay that he can do / receive while he is a student attending college.
Also as I am on income support I worry it will affect my money as well.

He told me that some of his mates are in a similar position and that their parents can continue claiming child benefit and tax credits, but I cannot trust what kids say as true.

All of u guys who give a sensible answer, thankyou.
But the idiot Kammy who doesnt know what he is talking about, listen u, I may sit in my **** but I have a bloody good reason 4 deoing so.
To cut things short, I could be dead within 10 years, so take this and shove it right up ur **** as people like u are not wanted, they should have hung u along with saddam. Do u like upsetting people? including the genuine disabled.
Ok there are one hell of a lot of scroungers out there who see the disability benefits as a way of getting a bit more money, well 2 those type of people, dont worry as ur time will come, a little knock on the door by the poliice and DSS officials, then its a new home 4 u, so u can sit in ur arses all day.

Sorry guys 4 the wee bit of naughty talk, couldnt help it, morons like this guy winds me up.

Yep, you can still get the child benifit & tax if he has a part time job. A lot of kids work a part time job or two to pay for dates, insurance, gas, and so on.

Your child benefit will not be affected so that is safe.He can keep claiming EMA as long as he is in full time education regardless off working part time. The other things i am unsure off.I wonder if you would haveto pay some housing costs or council tax based on his earnings. The department of work and pensions can tell you all about any changes and how they may affect your current situation.Call the helpline for instant advice.

I remember that I did not have to pay taxes until I was 18 (a while back). Your son is still your dependant and is still a minor. But, I am here in America and unfamiliar with other countries.

Talk to a tax advisor or an equivalent about this.

He can get a part time job on campus and it won't affect you at all. You will still provide him with the necessities.

Have him check career services or his college advisor.

Yes no problem. The only stipulation is that he works no more than 16 hours per week.

Once he turns 18 tax will be deducted out of his wage regardless how many hours he does, y does he need a job any way, you seem to b raking it in with the benefits, and you just sit on your backside.
