I live in Michigan right now, I have all my life, and I will be graduating from college in a year. Winter, and cold weather in general completely depresses me, it always has, and I know that I belong in an area that is going to be warm all year long. I have dreamt of such places as Hawaii of course, but all I hear is how expensive it is and the race issues going on there. My major is creative writing, and my minor is environmental studies...so no help there. I want to go to cosmetology school maybe, but that wont make much money either. Wherever I look, it seems it will be too expensive for me. I wish of being by the ocean, beaches, somewhere liberal and where the people are kind. I know this is a lot to ask, as most of us cant afford this...but isn't there any hope? I can not stay here, I feel restless and trapped, and I have to get out. Any suggestions on places would be very helpful, thanks.

honestly, you're probably better off to move somewhere that you can buy a house for cheap money, then wait till its gone up in price and sell it, so you can use that money to go somewhere warm. cost of living in florida is fairly low, (compared to up here in New England anyways) so i'd start by looking there to see what you can afford. are you moving alone? i'd recommend trying to find a person to room with to bring the cost down. when you first get out there it might be a good idea to room with just about anyone to save money. as you get more settled, you can be more picky about it. good luck!

Apparently you want to stay here in America. Well, Hawaii is still a nice place and if you don't want to worry about race issues, Maui is the place. Too bad living accomodations are so expensive. Florida would be your next best thing or San Diego, but you might have race issues there too. Good luck.

p.s. if you don't have to be near the ocean and beaches but still want to be near sand, you could try Arizona or New Mexico, plenty of opportunities there too as both are growing economically and housing isn't too expensive

You can do anything you want to do!
and ... live anywhere you want to live!!
"All" it takes is planning. Okay, maybe you won't be living in the million dollar beachfront home with the private pool ... though I would never rule anything out, not at your age! ... not yet!

But, if you plan, and learn to live in a budget, and to set priorities, you can manage to live about anywhere you want to live! Decide what is important to you. If it is more important that you wear the latest styles of clothing in brand names and own all the latest toys and drive a "cool" car ... then you will spend your available money on those goals. But if your goal is to live in a modest home on a beach somewhere, you can attain it!! And still have some of the other things as well. It all has to do with financial planning and budgeting.

Save up your money and take a road trip after you graduate, and visit lots of places!! Maybe you will find somewhere you just love! Invite a friend to start saving up for it as well ... it is safer and more fun with two, and you can divide the costs of the road trip!
