I live in California and a friend lives in Virginia. We are trying to find a place to go that is about half way between with our families. Is Rocky Mountain NP our best bet?

Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful and I would definitely recommend going there sometime. However, it is nowhere near halfway between California and Virginia.

Check out this website:
http://www.nps.gov/parks.html
It will help you locate other national parks that may be more closely located to the midway point for both families.

Of course, if flying is an option, there are LOTS of National Parks in California. Maybe your friend can fly out to see you and both families can go to Yosemite or some such place.

I would suggest Yellowstone National Park. Its has a fantastic variety of features and attractions. If you are going to drive as far as Colorado you may as well drive a ways North and experience the primier National PArk. Your friend can take I-90 to Yellowstone, instead of I-70 and he can stop at MT Rushmore on the way.

You can drive up I-15 and then take Rt-89 I think it is up to Yellowstone and see Jackson Hole and the Tetons on the way.

If you need motel rooms, try West Yellowstone, Mt, a town full of motels.
