With the size of memory chips reaching 8GB each shouldnt the OS be run on these chips? It sounds like it would be a lot faster and you wouldnt have to worry about drive crashing.

You can, I have xp on a 1gb flash drive. but flash drives are more likely to break than regular hard drives because of electromagnetic radiation and static shock. secondly, unless you can suppress the plug and play feature of the os upon startup your computer will blue screen and crash because the usb device will be disconnected. But like I said, it can be done.

Flash drives aren't the best way to do it. I would try for a microdrive. It's still portable and it doesn't have the problem with flash drives of only a minimum number of reads.

of course you can, in fact it was possible with DVD a longggg time ago.. quite ancient really
first linux had live CDs then some versions of Live DVDs of windows came out. with flash drives, windows should run even more smoothly.
the problem is that you really cant install anything on DVDs, but with flash drives everything should change

USB Drive didn't work from boot menu. Just run the setup after starting your system. Buy cd or dvd rom. Old models are now really very cheap in price.

It can be done but you have to have a PC that can boot to a USB attached drive and don't think windows can't screw up a flash drive cuz it sure can!
