The email provider you use isn't as important as how good their spam filter is. Yahoo is pretty good but you'd have to set it up for spam to be immediately removed, which you can do on your preferences page. You don't want him receiving filth or material inappropriate for a 10-year old. Since you can't be too careful I'd consider buying your own spam software to protect him.

You simply set him up as a secondary identity in whatever email you use if that's what you want to do.

The most popular instant messenger seems to be AOL, which can be used by anyone, regardless of whether they have AOL as their internet provider. I don't know which one is the safest and most secure. I'd skip the instant messaging for him at his age. If he needs you immediately he can call on the phone.

My kids are 7 and 8 and have had email accounts with Yahoo and Hotmail for the last three years! Do try to keep up, for your son's sake!

Email is dangerous, but you want to keep in touch. What you have to do is share as little real information as possible.
Also make a compromise. Say for example, He can add like 5 or whatever of his closest friends if they have email, but he has to tell you his password, so you can make sure he's not getting into anything inappropriate by accident.
Also tell him, obviously, Don't tell any strangers his email.

At the age of 10 there is no need for him to be on the net..I let my daughter on the net at 12 and before long she had people from everywhere chatting about things that I never learnt until I was 18..She would stay on it all the spare time she had..and completely cut out the rest of the family.she is surley and not nice at all now..so my advice is don't let him on the net....
