I think "remake" is overstating it. Both films describe the rise and fall of ambitious young toughs; in that regard, they share a common heritage.

The 1983 version is more of a reworking. The '32 version has the theme of the obsession with the sister, but for reasons which escape me, no snorting sacksfulls of coke off a desk.
