I have an Intro to Chem exam Tues morning and the instructor posed this question during our review last week. I cannot find the answer anywhere in my notes or in the text. Can anyone please assist with the correct answer. Thank you.

That state of matter is "gas". A liquid, which is also a state of matter will take the shape of its container but will not expand, like water in a cup. A gas however will take the shape of its container and will expand to fill the container.
Simple experiment: Light a match and drop it in a jar and close it. The smoke will then expand and fill the container while at the same time taking its shape.

Gases have no definite shape or volume. They take the shape of their container and expand to fill the container.
