If not, what are some tips to help me sort out legitimate opportunities from vanity press stuff?

http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/ is the best place to start sorting out the legitimate from the scams. Not only do they cover contests, but they have information on agents, publishers, organizations, and more. They actually don't recommend any contests that charge a fee.

Fees are sometimes charged to defray the expense (time) it takes to review and/or notify contestants. It shouldn't be more than $5 - $10. I use winning writers.com to select my contests. They do the research for you.

to make money of desperate writers who don't know any better. I would avoid any contest that requires an entry fee ;)
