I think that the reason that everyone calls their partner baby is because when you have a baby you would do anything for them and you would do just about anything for you partner!

I don't use the word baby for my partner, but I know a lot of people who do. There are all kinds of "terms of endearment", some are more suggestive than others. See website source below.

I think we started this because of movies or songs .. but basically its a term of endearment. A sign of you are mine, you belong to me. I've often thought it odd also. But I'm guilty for using the term. LOL
Other names used: Honey; Love Muffin; Snuggles; Babycakes; Sweetheart; Babe; Love; plus a million other sweet names based on something that someone said or did once and we coined the personal term based on that event ....

Because we have a natural state of mind to take care of the people we love..so we call them baby without thinking about it because we take care of them and love them.

"Baby" is just one term of endearment among many. I suppose any word that evokes tender feelings toward your loved one can be used. Some that I've heard include: darling, sweetheart, boo, punkin', and love.

That's what my son's girlfriend, Tiffany G, calls my son, lol. I also call my hubby that, plus Honey, Sugar, Babe.

I think it stems to that we like to cuddle them and take care of them as you would a real baby.
