I have 2 children and we have had less than 20 degree weather for the last 2 months. I am starting to get depressed and crabby, anything herbal I can take to make me feel better? Me and the kids are used to being outside a lot. I take them to play areas at malls and Mcdonalds play area a couple times a month but that dosent seem to help my mood. Please help! Serious answers please!!

I'm with you! I have experienced seasonal affective disorder (SAD) for many years, and it was really hard when my kids were home with me all day. Now that mine are in school, I make a point of getting exercise 4-5 times a week. Herbal supplements didn't really help me much, but exercise and light help a great deal.

You are on the right track going to play areas at malls and such, it helps to get out of your house. And the kids are getting physical activity. But you need to get your body moving too! Exercise stimulates all the happy brain chemicals, so try to do an exercise video, or put on some music and dance around at home. Be totally silly with you kids!

There are full spectrum light bulbs you can buy to put in your light fixtures at home. There is also something call OTT light that is marketed to crafters and artists for it's full spectrum output. It's a little on the expensive side, but I have had mine for like 6 or 7 years and have not needed to replace the bulb yet.

Exercise and light. give 'em a try. Good luck!

I know about SAD now and that helps me understand why winter depresses me. Try the lights on everyone and go to the mall. Take the kids sledding a bit if they 're old enough. I go to the library where there is a lot of light. They don't have any story programs in the winter for kids in the winter, but maybe you could read to them or use a computer with them.

there are so many things you can do in the winter outside, skiing, snowboarding, skating, sledding, and easiest of all, winter hikes. Dress warm and go have fun. I spend more time outdoors in the winter then in the summer. Its also a great time to try out new indoor activities. Try yoga with your kids or sign them up for dance classes or indoor rock climbing. Now is the time to get them into sports.

You need sunlight/bright lighting. Yes, I get it too. Light and exercise will help. At least we are on the up-swing. Days are getting longer! And daylight savings time starts the first weekend in March now! 2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March. HOOOOORAY!
