I have many friends of all different nationalities. I often have conversations about racism across campus and most of them believe it's a thing of the past.

Unfortunately since Barack Obama has been contemplating running for president everybody is saying the same thing...

"Our country isn't ready for a black president"

So my question is...if so many people think rasicm is a thing of the past than why arent we ready for a black president?

Why can't people admit that their are still people who see a black man..even if it isnt themselves!

Unfortunatly, racism is not a thing of the past. People in a college setting can tend to be idealist about certain things. Because they are learning about what really makes sense in an ideal world. When you hear that our country isn't ready for a black president, you most likely are hearing that from the media, not from your friends.

I am very sorry dear but racism is not a thing of the pass and most like will last another sixty to one hundred years.
This world is not ready for a black president, look at the Mayor of New Orleans. He wants to rebuild everything, that there is no smart because the next major storm is going to wipe out New Orleans.
True Not blacks are brain dead like he is , but are you really ready for a black President.
It may not be as good as what you think it would be a free car for every black.
Remember he only has limited power and not full.
It is really sad that racism still is around but it is not just between blacks and whites, it is everyone

I think more people have a problem with his church than his skin.

And he isn't really qualified. He is just a one term senator.

Kennedy was a senator and was an awful President. He was for all the right things but he never had an executive position and he really screwed up a lot in big ways.

Bay of pigs for example.

You are asking us to vote for him just because he is black and that's as wrong as racism is wrong.

I hope Condi runs. I don't care about her skin color or the fact she is female. I would support her even if she was a fat white guy.

So there.

Racism may be a thing of the past but there's still more than enough to go around. I would not like to be a black man running for president. He would require an awful lot of secret service protection to stay alive. Killing a black president would make the killer famous. And then there's the book and movie deals that the family and acquaintances of the killer would get.

Unfortunately, there are still racist people out there in the U.S., and they are allowed to vote along with the rest of us. Because of this, it will be difficult to get a black man elected president - I won't even start on the statistics of getting a black woman elected.

People still harbor the old "sensibilities" (note the Quotations of Sarcasm) of times gone by, which is why we've never had a black president, or a woman for president ("Oh my God, it's her time of the month, she'll set off the nukes!"). It's ridiculous, but then, so is a lot of American politics.

Note: I'm not saying we won't or can't elect a black man/woman or a woman for president. I'm merely saying that it's never happened. Personally, I'll be voting Democratic, and I'm praying it'll be Obama who's sitting in the White House come '09.

No it merely proved that black human beings can do the comparable issues as white human beings do to get the flexibility they have. And it sent a message to white those that, yeap, your place isn't any irriplacable. whilst they theory that purely the better positions in existence the place owned by skill of white human beings, they're incorrect. the two secretary of states could desire to have proved that, yet they didnt truly pay attention to obama made president. And for those of you who say "hes no longer black" He thinks hes black, his fighters think of hes black. the only people who do no longer think of hes black is people who desire to sound politically splendid. No human beings hes been seen as black his total existence. And if he walked by your door on the instant with out asserting a be conscious. you're able to say he grow to be black. They tried to attack his faith and grow to be proved incorrect. some human beings merely dont settle for defeat trouble-free. So then they tried to assert he's a million/2 white. To make it sound greater powerful that its no longer a black man or woman. Hes the 1st black president and that they chalk it up. merely recover from it human beings.

I hope that we are looking at potential candidates based on ISSUES and IDEAS, Leadership qualities and character, not his or her skin color.

I do not share the same political views as Barack Obama, so I probably wouldn't vote for him. I would vote for Condi Rice, however (who is 100% black), but she hasn't announced that she's running.

Sadly, racasm does exist, here and throughout the world. And yes, there are people who will or will not vote for a candidate because he or she is or isn't black. That's just the way it is and will be until the end of time...sigh.

I read a story on the AP not 3 weeks ago that 80% of American's wouldn't factor race into a vote. Your question is factless. AsI always say, if the candidate is a conservative and stands for what I believe in, he can be purple for all I care. I would vote for Allen Keyes over ANY white liberal. You need to get with the times, friend. 1961 is over.

Of course there's racism everywhere. I live in England, have you heard about the celebrity big brother scandal here? I just shows you people are racist without even knowing it. People aren't just racist about people of african origin they are racist about asian, oriental. . . Of cource America is ready for a black president (or an asian etc.) president) it's the person who counts not the colour anyway.

i do not think that it has to do with a "black" president

i would be for or against a black president BECAUSE HE IS BLACK

that would NOT factor into my decision

however, i would not vote for barack obama
because i do not think that he is a good choice for pres

that is not racisim
however, it is racism when someone votes for him or not because he is black
and that is wrong
