Great question. Yes, people make that desicion when they have children that for the next 20-25 years that child's need will come before their own. If people are not ready to do that than they should not have children.

I don't think that children should necessarily COME BEFORE the adults' wants and desires. I believe that once you have children that all further decisions should be made IN LIGHT OF THE FACT that you now have children. I think too much of what is wrong in society today stems from the extent to which parents HAVE put children first, to the exclusion of all else, including tending to their own relationship. Parents need to understand that the best thing they can do for their children is to love and nurture their OWN relationship and well-being. For example, it is not necessarily in the best interest of the child to send her to music lessons, soccer camp, girl scouts, etc. when one of the parents is wanting to go back to school. It may ultimately benefit the entire family unit for the parent to go to school and the kids to do a little less.

5-Not only deserve, but must have to become well adjusted and raised as they should be. They can't learn anything important or what is important when raised with only one parent.

The general answer is yes, because that is a contract you make with the child - to protect and raise him/her in a safe environment. It's also the legal burden you assume when you have a child.
To your more specific question - I don't believe marital status has any bearing on the way a child is raised or protected, so no, I don't think marriage is required before having a child.

Lots of people live together, have kids, and function completely normally and never get married. It's narrow-minded to say that you have to sign a piece of paper and stand in a church to be committed enough to have kids.
