I played hockey in my 20's to early 30's. I am now 53 and have a chance to join an "over 50's" league in my home town. Besides getting new equipment, what do you suggest I do to get ready for the upcoming 2007-08 season? I have all spring and summer to get in shape. What do you suggest? I am not fat or anything like that, just a little paunchy. Help me get in shape. What should I do this coming spring and summer? How do I get lean and mean?
Any suggestions are welcomed!

I was in your place once. The best advice I can give is to just eat right and skate CONSTANTLY in the off-season.

In the time you are not playing get in 4-5 hours of skating every week. You will need to sharpen your skates every 8-10 hours of skating. Also skate on fresh ice (no lakes or ponds). Although skating on lakes and ponds aren't harmful, a well kept rink is much better. SKATE ALL THE TIME!!! Cross-training is very important, so in the time you are not playing jog once a morning.

Also, talk to other players in your area for recommendations about rinks and what places have the best preparatory food. Before a game, I recommend a steak and salad. It is very important to eat right if you are very serious. Another thing: DRINK ALOT...ALOT...ALOT. Especially before a game when you start up.

When you workout, focus on your upper-body and legs. You won't have to worry about your legs so much if you proceed with jogging.

Good Luck!

Work on cardio and buy a pair of rollerblades to skate as much as you can during the summer. I play in an over 40 league and the legs arent what they used to be so I put in lots of time on the treadmill and skate as often as I can. Getting back the legs and cardio ( good heart and lungs will go a long ways both in hockey and life) are the key, everything else will come along fairly easily. Plus my over 40 league is a no check league so skating is the best way to get ready and be fairly good. The key is to outskate the other team. So skate, bike, sit ups, treadmills (dont run outside if you have knee problems like me, they will become worse on hard surface running) or whatever other exercise that gets the blood pumping and builds leg strength. Good luck and have fun!!

Deffinitely get your cardio up, stair master, run, bike. Work on your hip flexors too so you can tear it up. There is this machine I've used in some gym's that's a little uncomfortable at first but works your groin and hip flexors. You sit upright in it with your thighs spread apart against these pads and then you push your thighs together and the desired weight goes up. Then reverse the machine and push out for the outside of your thighs. Of course the best prep is pick up hockey any time you can.

lots of cardio. strength training is a must. and while you're at it, target the groin area for muscle training, it's an area that not many ppl pay attention to, but it's the area that ppl usually get hurt easily, especially when they haven't played for a while.

ask a trainer about which exercises targets this.

another area to target is the core. the core gives you strength for most motions, including a harder shot and you'll be tougher to push off the puck.

Make sure that you work on your cardio. We don't want u to be another statistic - Headline - "recreational hockey player has heart attack." And make sure that the rink has appropriate medical equipment - a defibrillator is a must.

RUNNING
WALKING (PLAYING GOLF THIS SUMMER)
BIKING
AND BUY A NET AND PRACTISE SHOOTING AT IT THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER IN YOUR DRIVE WAY, OR GET SOME FRIENDS TO RENT A GYM ONCE A WEEK AND PLAY SOME BALL HOCKEY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

THIS SHOULD HELP YOU GET BACK IN SHAPE AND GET YOUR GAME STARTED BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS.
